Program directory

Perfusion programs, requirements, and contacts in one place.

A practical starting point for comparing cardiovascular perfusion programs without opening twenty tabs first.

This page is built for applicants. It gives you a searchable program list, requirement snapshots, public contacts, and the questions you should ask before you apply. It is not a replacement for official school pages or CAAHEP/AC-PE verification.

Read this first

Do not treat any program list as final.

Perfusion admissions details can change by cycle. A serious applicant should verify accreditation status, deadlines, prerequisites, tuition, clinical rotations, cohort size, interview format, and board eligibility directly with official sources.

Verification rule: Before applying, check the official program page, the CAAHEP accredited-program search, and the program’s admissions contact. If a school is described as seeking accreditation or under review, ask the program exactly what that means for board eligibility and timing.

Requirement patterns

Most programs are looking for the same core signals, but the details differ.

Bachelor’s degreeMost entries require a bachelor’s degree or eligibility to complete one before matriculation. Certificate programs may still require a completed bachelor’s.
Science prerequisitesCommon areas include biology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, physics, math, statistics, and sometimes organic chemistry/biochemistry. Always verify exact course names and credit hours.
GPA minimumMany public summaries show minimums around 3.0, but some are lower or higher. A minimum is not the same as a competitive average.
Shadowing or exposureSome programs require or recommend observing a perfusionist or cardiac case. If you cannot shadow, ask what alternatives they accept.
Clinical experienceSome programs value direct patient care, OR exposure, research, or prior healthcare employment. Ask if experience is required, recommended, or simply helpful.
GRE/testingSome public summaries still mention GRE expectations. Testing policies change, so verify with the program before planning around it.

What to ask

Good questions make you look prepared, not annoying.

“Is the program currently CAAHEP-accredited or operating under Letter of Review or another status? How does that affect eligibility for ABCP exams for my expected cohort?”

“Would your admissions team be able to confirm whether my anatomy, physiology, chemistry, physics, statistics, and math courses satisfy your prerequisite expectations?”

“How are clinical rotation sites assigned, and should students expect to relocate or travel during the program?”

“Do you require perfusion shadowing, and if a hospital does not allow shadowing, what forms of exposure or documentation do you consider acceptable?”

“How many students are admitted, and where do recent graduates tend to work after completion?”

How to choose

A strong program fit is more than the shortest route.

Students often compare programs by length and location first. Those matter, but they are not enough. Your shortlist should also consider accreditation status, rotation quality, case exposure, board preparation, cost, support, and whether the program is realistic for your profile.

Accreditation statusCheck CAAHEP directly and ask about any status that is unclear.
Prerequisite fitConfirm exact courses, labs, credit hours, expiration rules, and online-course policies.
Clinical exposureAsk about adult, pediatric, ECMO, VAD, transplant, and external rotation expectations.
Cost and relocationInclude tuition, fees, living cost, travel, rotation relocation, and lost income.
Cohort and supportAsk about class size, faculty access, mentorship, remediation, and board-prep structure.
Outcome signalsAsk what outcomes they publish or can discuss: board eligibility, placement support, and graduate paths.

Contact policy

Public contacts only, respectful use only.

The directory may list program directors or admissions contacts when those details appear on official program pages or public program directories. Readers should use them respectfully for admissions questions, not spam, scraping, or mass outreach.

Program correction policy: If a program wants a preferred admissions contact listed, a faculty name removed, or a row updated, The Pump Room should update it promptly after review.

What to verify directly

  • Current accreditation or Letter of Review status
  • Prerequisite course equivalency
  • Application deadline and start term
  • Shadowing or observation expectations
  • Tuition, fees, and financial aid
  • Clinical rotation travel requirements
  • Board eligibility and outcomes
